A gunman opened fire on a street in southern Egypt on Monday, killing eight people before security forces shot and killed him, authorities said.

Footage released by Egyptian news outlet Cairo24.com showed security forces and ambulances gathered outside Assiut University Hospital.

The Interior Ministry said five other people were wounded in the shooting in Assiut province.

Security forces pursued the attacker and killed him in an exchange of gunfire, the ministry said.

The attacker’s motives are not yet known, but authorities said he had a history of psychological disorders and had previously received treatment at a psychiatric hospital in Cairo.
