Ivory Coast Observes 10th Anniversary of 2016 Grand-Bassam Terrorist Attack

On March 13, 2026, Côte d’Ivoire solemnly observed the 10th anniversary of the 2016 Grand-Bassam terrorist attack, which claimed 19 lives and wounded dozens more at the popular beach resort east of Abidjan.

The victims included Ivorians as well as foreign nationals four French citizens, one German, one Macedonian, one Lebanese, one Nigerian, and one Malian.

The attackers, affiliated with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and al-Mourabitoun, claimed the assault was retaliation for French-led and allied counterterrorism operations in the Sahel region.

Ivory Coast authorities arrested several individuals in connection with the attack the country’s first jihadist incident claimed by AQIM though the perpetrators themselves were killed during the security response.

The March 13, 2016, assault marked the third major jihadist attack in West Africa within four months, dealing a significant setback to Ivory Coast’s efforts to revive tourism at its scenic, palm-lined beaches and rainforests following years of civil war recovery.
