Sudan’s Military Chief Holds Talks with Saudi Crown Prince in Jeddah

As Sudan’s civil war enters its fourth year, General Abdel-Fattah Burhan, head of the country’s armed forces, arrived in Jeddah on Monday for talks with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, their discussion focused on ensuring Sudan’s security and stability while preserving its sovereignty.

The Kingdom has provided political and financial backing to the Sudanese Armed Forces in their war against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

It has also played a leading role in mediating the conflict, alongside the United States, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Abu Dhabi, meanwhile, stands accused of supplying the RSF with money and weapons allegations it strongly denies.

Riyadh is set to host a Sudanese-Saudi business forum in June to tackle investment challenges. Trade between the two countries is estimated at $8 billion, largely driven by Saudi imports of livestock and agricultural products.

The kingdom has already invested more than $35 billion in Sudan, the bulk of which is directed toward agricultural projects.
